Tuesday 13 August: Streatham’s Theatrical Heritage

A presentation by Liz Burton:

“When a group of us got together at a New Year’s Eve party to see in 2013 and decided to start a theatre company to ‘put theatre into StheatreM’, it was with the distinct feeling that Streatham was a bit of a theatrical wasteland, with everyone looking to the West End for entertainment. This certainly isn’t the case now, nor was it in the past. Streatham’s history as a thriving south London urban community is short but eventful, and Streatham has always had strong links with both professional and amateur theatre.

Let me tell you about some of the vanished buildings and forgotten personalities that helped to create Streatham’s Theatrical Heritage!"

About Liz: I’ve been involved in theatre on and off since I was a child. I’ve appeared in many shows and been part of the production team for many others, often in charge of costume. The production I’m most proud of is the site-specific version of Hamlet which STC performed in St. Leonard’s church last September, and which I adapted and directed. After around 30 years as a writer of software user manuals and training courses I now call myself a (generally) non-fiction writer. I conducted many of the interviews on which STC’s Playing with Sugar was based, and helped to dramatise some of the stories. I also wrote the guides’ script for our tours of Streatham Hill Theatre, a building I love very much. I’ve always had a passion for local and social history.

18-20 October: Streatham Festival show - Directing Opportunity

We are planning to perform a rehearsed reading of Louis de Bernières Sunday Morning at the Centre of the World and would like to offer the chance to direct the piece. It has been described as Under Milk Wood for South London, being set in Earlsfield.

As a rehearsed reading there is less emphasis on learning lines and blocking movement, and more on characterisation through voices. It would be an ideal opportunity for a potential new director, with support from the STC family. Interested? Let us know by email at info@streathamtheatre.org.uk

Streatham Shorts IV: Invitation to Writers

Ever thought about writing and directing a play, comedy sketch or monologue? Do you already have a piece that has never been aired?

STC is inviting submissions for STREATHAM SHORTS; an evening of short performances written and directed by new writers. Suitable pieces may be nominated to go forward for a public performance. Submissions (10 minutes maximum run-time) should be submitted no later than Monday 19 August 2019

Email your script to info@streathamtheatre.org.uk with the subject ‘Streatham Shorts’.

Shortlisted pieces will be read at our "Second Tuesday workshop" on 10 September 2019 at 7.30pm. Selected writers will be notified and should ideally be available to present their piece.

Last year several entries were performed by STC actors at our Streatham's Got Talent event in December.
